Ms Kong Huay Siew’s journey as a volunteer with HCA Hospice began from a deeply personal place. During her father’s final days, her family found themselves overwhelmed by the emotional weight and uncertainty of end-of-life care. HCA’s care team was there at every step of the way, offering compassionate support and guidance throughout the difficult journey. The comfort of having someone by her side left an indelible mark on Ms Kong’s heart. Inspired, she signed up as a volunteer in 2017 to share the same warmth, strength and reassurance that had touched her.

What began as a simple wish to give back has become an essential part of her life. Over the years, Ms Kong has devoted over 1,500 hours to caring for more than 300 patients and families. Just as HCA once journeyed with her, she now journeys alongside each patient, providing a cherished source of warmth and comfort.
Much of her time volunteering is spent as a Vigil Angel, where she offers comfort and dignity for patients in their final hours. She remembers a particularly challenging visit to a patient whose condition left his hair matted and infested with maggots. Determined to care for him, Ms Kong dabbed essential oils onto a tissue and placed it inside her mask to ease the overpowering odour. With gentle hands and a heart full of empathy, she cleansed his hair, each careful movement a quiet promise to honour his dignity.
Bringing immense comfort and peace to patients by soothing the human senses
Ms Kong also dedicates time to HCA’s young Star PALS patients as a Medi Minder, providing them with care and companionship while offering families respite from the daily grind of caregiving. A particularly memorable encounter involved a teenage girl, who was around her daughter’s age. On their first meeting, Ms Kong brought her flowers – a simple gesture to break the ice. When she learned that the girl frequently ordered takeout, she began preparing home-cooked meals to nourish her with fresh, nutritious food. The warmth that she brings is especially impactful for young patients who need more than clinical care.

For Ms Kong, the impact of her care extends beyond life’s final chapter. Even after her patients’ passing, she keeps their memories alive, reaching out to their families on the anniversaries of their passing. Through a bouquet of flowers or a heartfelt note, she honours each patient, reminding caregivers that their loved ones are never forgotten.
To her fellow volunteers, she is a steadfast friend who embodies the spirit of care. A talented baker, she brings homemade treats to events and gatherings, nurturing a supportive community that ensures those around her feel valued.

Ms Kong’s dedication has not gone unnoticed, having been recognised with numerous awards in HCA and on a national level. This year, she was also accorded the prestigious President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award 2024, which honours individuals who have made lasting impact on the community. Yet for Ms Kong, the true reward lies not in titles, but in the comfort she brings to patients and families. When asked about the award, she smiled, admitting she hadn’t even kept track of her service hours. “It’s not about awards for me,” she says. “It’s about helping where I can, for as long as I am able.”
