Medi Minders is a respite care service, provided to the families of our young patients cared for under our Star PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) programme. It provides parents and caregivers a few hours of respite, to care for other children in the family, run errands or simply to take a breather and to relieve them from the daily burden of caregiving.
Medi Minder volunteers are specially trained to take care of children and young adults, with complex nursing care needs. Some of the tasks that our Medi Minders are trained to carry out include:
Basic nursing care, such as tube feeding or suctioning
Administering medication
Transferring the patient
Bathing and dressing the patient / changing of diapers
Providing adult supervision
Companionship
Due to the specialised nature of the role, Medi Minder volunteers are expected to commit to at least 8 hours a month and undergo the necessary training before deployment. All Medi Minder volunteer applications will also be subject to a stringent screening process, as volunteers will be working with vulnerable children. More information can be found in this factsheet.
