“Precious Gems 6″ – Charity begins with many!
28 October 2016

by Ms Angeline Wee, CEO of HCA Hospice Care

The sky was looming with dark clouds and I was concerned as it was our charity golf event day. Thankfully, our prayers were answered. The dark clouds went away and the day turned out beautifully for everyone to enjoy their game!

Most importantly, our annual charity golf event raised more than $430,000 this year! We cannot thank all our donors, volunteers and team members enough for their generosity.

For a start, we saw many generous donors and sponsors who bought all the 36 flights of golf, with donations ranging from $3,000 to $40,000 per flight. Many others generously donated outright cash, sponsored prizes and auction items, including their art pieces, while others gave their precious time and effort in ensuring that our event ran smoothly.

At the 11th hole, there was a novelty round. For $20 per try, golfers could try to hit the golf ball within a 4×4 ft area round the hole, to win an exclusive washer cum dryer. For that, we managed to collect over $4000, as golfers paid for multiple tries. Four of them were successful and there was a draw to determine the winner.

At dinner, we had a beautiful salsa dance performance by ACTFA to kick off the activities, the second time this year it has donated its time. Then Ms W, one of our event organisers, gave a most touching speech about her daughter Pam, who was a beneficiary of HCA. She spoke about how Pam and the family were touched and grateful for how our nurse and doctor looked after them. Pam passed away just over a year ago in July 2015, but Ms W bravely spoke to the dinner crowd of nearly 200 and her speech must have touched the hearts of all who were present, as we had such fantastic responses from the audience for the live auction that followed.

We were able to auction off all the items that were put up and collected nearly $20,000. I thought that that would be the end to an already wonderful evening, but I was wrong. Three winners of the top four lucky draw prizes donated their prizes back for auction and we collected over $1,000 for the items. This was not the end. Touched by the stories of patients HCA has helped, Mr and Mrs G, who own a restaurant, made an impromptu decision to donate dinner tables at their restaurant, raising more than $20,000 from 14 tables sold. It was indeed a humbling and touching experience for me – to see so many generous and warm hearted ‘gems’ donate to our cause.

After our guests departed, more ‘gems’ appeared. Our HCA team members appeared to pack up for the evening. They had worked tirelessly all night, running around the dinner tables making sure that they took down particulars of every successful bidder at the auction. Only at 10.30pm when all the guests had gone home, did they start to eat their dinner. Where else would you find such dedication, except at HCA.

What started out as a gloomy day, turned out to be a GEM of an evening! I am proud to be part of HCA and would not exchange this for anything in the world.
