Five Creative And Simple Ways to Volunteer
26 December 2017

Make volunteering your New Year’s resolution!

Volunteering may seem daunting especially if you have had no prior experience.

“Which organisation should I help?

I may not have the adequate skills or talents – what can I do to help?”

These thoughts and concerns are real and possibly at the back of every volunteer-to-be’s mind. There are hundreds of social welfare organisations and you may not know where to start.

It always begins with a compassionate heart and generous spirit.

Here are five simple and creative ways you too can add life to someone’s life:

1. Fulfilling last wishes

What would you do if you had three months to live? Visit the Seven Wonders of the World? Tick off what’s left on your bucket list?

HCA often receives requests from beneficiaries to help fulfill their wishes during their end-of-life journey. As best as possible, the team goes out of their way to fulfill them. They can be as simple as visiting the Singapore Zoo, going to the beach or celebrating a birthday. Every experience is an opportunity for beautiful memories to be created for both beneficiaries and their families.

2. Pet-Assisted Therapy (PAT)

Bring your furry friend along to share the joy and comfort to our Day Care Centre’s beneficiaries. Studies have shown that PAT helps to improve motor skills and balance for those undergoing rehabilitation and also reduces anxiety, blood pressure and depressive symptoms.

Once a month, our volunteers visit our day hospice care centre with their little furry friends who enjoy cuddling up next to our folks. Our therapy pets come in all shapes and sizes, including a fluffy little bunny!

Do note that all pets and pet-owners need to undergo training and assessment prior to involvement in PAT.

3. Publishing legacy books

Everyone has a story to tell and some of our patients have expressed their wish to share. You can help HCA’s beneficiaries capture their life in a legacy book that they can leave behind for loved ones. Journey with them through memory lane and bring their experiences and anecdotes to life. Not much of a writer? How about sketching it out into a story book or doing a pictorial by way of a photo-journal? There are many ways to tell a story.

4. Taking portraits for beneficiaries

It may be the era of selfies and wefies but nothing is more treasured than a family keepsake.

HCA’s Family Foto Fair held in June 2017 was a big hit with our beneficiaries and their families! The event was made possible only with massive support from the volunteers.

If you have a knack for the performing arts, photography, videography, beauty and hair styling, or if simply want to be a cheerleader and interact with the beneficiaries through fun and games, this is for you!

5. Organise a food fair to raise funds

Pull your friends, family or colleagues together to organise a mini food-fair at your office or even in your neighbourhood to raise funds for a meaningful cause. Not only will it be a great bonding opportunity, it may even galvanise others to take up volunteering!

A group of wonderful nurses from Mount Elizabeth Hospital did just that and raised a generous sum of $10,000 for HCA while having a ton of fun in the process!

The time is now

There is a volunteer opportunity for every person. There is no need for any superhero skills – even a smile or your gift of time is more than enough to bring joy to our beneficiaries. It always begins with a compassionate heart and generous spirit.
