Young Caregiver (YCG) Programme
"Projects like this really put life in perspective amidst the daily routines of work/school, thank you."
- Comment given by the Student of Raffles Junior College
Studies have shown that children and youths who have experienced death in their families are very clear about their needs. These include:
- Knowing something was wrong and having to figure it out for themselves.
- Feeling very lonely and afraid when they saw their family members upset and ill but not daring to ask any questions.
- Wishing they had known how serious the illness had been, because they would have liked to have got closer or helped more.
- Having someone to talk to.
How do we provide hope and give these young people a sense of control over their lives in such circumstances? How can we create healthy and open discussions, sensitively without sounding morbid or fatalistic?
HCA Hospice Care has developed three video programmes for children and youths of different age groups. These videos provide a platform for them to discuss and share issues relating to death and dying - life's natural cycle. The programme encourages students to share, interact and communicate - the foundation for building loving and caring relationships at home and in the community.
"Really am motivated to go help those old people to make them happy. I really want to do it! I'm going to do it! Yes! Yes! Yes!"
